INTRODUCING THE CB500F

OVERVIEW

The CB500F has an entertaining twin-cylinder engine wrapped in a simple, lightweight, sporty chassis, which can be as much fun for a veteran rider as it is for those still building their riding experience.

While the CB500Fs compact dimensions and welcoming manners make it a great tool for learning, and sensible running costs are ideal for commuting, those same attributes make it a genuine pleasure for weekend outings.

ENGINE/INTAKE

The eight-valve, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin-cylinder engine offers a well-proportioned balance of physical size and willing, enjoyable power output, with an energetic, high-revving character and capable top-end performance.

Already strong off the bottom, this year development focused on faster acceleration through a boost in low-to-mid-range power and torque in the 3,000 to 7,000rpm range.

Feeding the PGM-FI fuel injection is now a straight shot of airflow through the airbox and throttle bodies.

The battery has been repositioned further away from the rear of the airbox intake duct to allow greater airflow.

The exhaust muffler now features dual exit pipes, adding a sportier-sounding edge to each pulse. Peak power arrives at 8,500 rpm, with maximum torque delivered at 7,000 rpm.

The primary couple-balancer sits behind the cylinders, close to the bike’s centre of gravity. The primary and balancer gears use scissor gears, reducing noise.

The crank counterweight is specifically shaped for couple-balance is light to allow the engine to spin freely, with reduced inertia.

A six-speed gearbox mirrors that of the RR and uses the same gear-change arm structure and link mechanism.

An assist/slipper clutch enables lighter upshifts and smoother downshifts.

The engine complements the frame’s rigidity with four frame hangers on the cylinder head.

Internally, the cylinder head uses roller-rocker arms; shim-type valve adjustment allows them to be light, for lower valve-spring load and reduced friction.

A silent cam chain has the surface of its pins treated with Vanadium, reducing friction with increased protection against wear.

CHASSIS/SUSPENSION

The unchanged 35mm steel diamond-tube mainframe is light and strong, with a tuned degree of yield that gives optimum feedback to the rider as road surfaces change.

Vibration is minimised by the shape and position of the engine mounts, plus the frame’s rigidity balance.

The geometry gives nimble, yet confidence-inspiring steering.

Mass centralisation, with the engine in close proximity to the swing-arm pivot point, delivers turning agility, while optimum front/rear weight distribution ensures stability.

The low seat height makes the CB500F very easy to manage and its neutral riding position comfortably accommodates riders of varying heights.

The 41mm preload-adjustable telescopic fork delivers a compliant yet controlled ride and gives great feel for front-tire grip.

A new single-tube rear shock (as found on larger-capacity sport bikes) replaces the double-tube design of the previous model; its large-diameter piston ensures excellent suspension response and temperature management. It has nine-stage spring preload adjustment and works through a rigid box-section steel swing-arm, which now features pressed-steel chain-adjustment end-pieces.

Lightweight, 17-inch cast-aluminium wheels employ hollow cross-section Y-shaped spokes. A single front 320mm petal-style disc and two-piston brake calliper is matched to a 240mm rear disc and single-piston calliper.

ABS is standard.

STYLING

The CB500Fs naked form has evolved front to rear and exudes a newfound aggression.

Led by the penetrating headlight design, the machine’s stance is low-set and ready for action; the side shrouds interlock with the fuel tank and fully emphasise the engine, while the side covers and seat unit continue the theme of muscular

INTRODUCING THE CB1000R

INTRODUCTION

Honda’s venerable CB1000R sport standard turns an important corner for 2018, with a ground-up redesign that bridges the gap between performance and bare-boned Café Racer inspirations. In a dramatic identity shift, the CB1000R receives cutting-edge Neo-Sports Café styling, an updated chassis, and an improved electronics package—all changes that bolster performance while highlighting the importance of a strong, emotional connection between rider and machine.

ENGINE

The 2018 CB1000R’s 998cc DOHC four-cylinder engine—which shares its architecture and layout with the previous-generation CBR1000RR super sport bike—has been reworked to provide healthy increases in power and torque. Compression ratio is up 0.4 to 11.6:1 and the pistons are now forged (rather than cast), as with the CBR1000RR SP.

Development concentrated on improved gas flow into, through, and out of the cylinder head. Valve lift is higher, with inlet at 8.5mm and exhaust 8.1mm (as opposed to 7.9 and 7.8mm). A 44mm diameter throttle body (up 8mm) feeds larger-diameter inlet ports; the shape of the combustion chambers is also revised. The airbox, ducting, and air filter are also brand new and present a much simpler, smoother route for airflow into the engine, reducing pressure loss all the way from the outer ducts to the throttle body.

A new 4-2-1 design exhaust system adds to the CB1000R’s midrange muscle, and a link pipe joins the two main pipes just before the catalyzers, boosting torque at 5,000 rpm and above.

TECHNOLOGY
Throttle By Wire (TBW) has also been added to the platform, allowing the rider various options for utilizing the powerful engine, via three preset riding modes plus 1 USER mode (selected from a switch on the left handlebar).

There are three levels of Engine Power (P), Engine Brake (EB), and Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) available; HSTC can also be switched off. The three individual riding modes offer different combinations of each parameter.

RAIN mode employs the lowest Power setting, medium EB, and high HSTC. The lower levels of power and torque are focused on the first three gears. STANDARD mode uses the middle setting for Power, HSTC, and EB. It reduces output a bit in first and second gears and uses a power curve that sits just below that of SPORT mode, with reduced torque at partial throttle openings. It also allows for small rear-wheel slides and the front wheel leaving the ground. SPORT uses high Power and lowest levels of EB and HSTC to deliver 100% power through all six gears, maximum torque at all throttle positions, and minor intervention from HSTC. The USER mode allows the rider to choose between the three settings for each parameter and save the setting for future use.

STYLING
The 2018 CB1000R’s styling takes a bold, distinct new direction that deliberately separates it from the naked-bike mainstream. Every aesthetic detail has been finessed for a dramatically updated overall design, with a powerful stance and an elevated performance package. The CB1000R’s proportions are now much compact, with a trapezoid silhouette. The overhang of the distinctly styled round headlight is 3.5 inches shorter, and the swingarm-mounted rear mudguard unit (a first for Honda) allows for an extremely short, sculpted aluminium tail unit that incorporates neat, under-slung passenger handholds.

Only six exterior parts are constructed from plastic, the largest being the svelte front mudguard. By contrast, what really makes its presence felt is the use of premium metal finishes throughout, drawing on the long café-racer tradition—parts such as the burnished-aluminium radiator shroud and airbox cover; machined engine cases, cylinder head, and sprocket hub; and flangeless steel fuel tank.

All lighting is LED, and the thin, round headlight employs a horseshoe-shaped light ring, as well as a distinctive two-bar light signature. The rear light is also a semicircular light bar that

ENGINE
The secret to the Africa Twin’s wide-ranging abilities starts with its engine, which has to perform in off-road situations as well as on-road, over long-range tours, short commutes and all points in between. As such, it provides an optimum balance between power, torque, mass and physical dimension.

The four-valve 998cc parallel twin Unicam unit’s tractable and usable all-day performance belies its extremely compact dimensions. They are the result of clever packaging touches such as housing the water pump within the clutch casing, and using the engine’s balancer shafts to also drive water and oil pumps. As a result, longitudinally, it is the same length as Honda’s popular 500cc engine, and its short height contributes to the Africa Twin’s all-important 250mm of ground clearance.

The airbox ensures a strong the mid-range response, as does a lighter balancer shaft weight. A revised exhaust serves up an even more evocative howl as revs rise and also contributes to the improved performance.

TRANSMISSION/ELECTRONICS
The lightweight six-speed manual gearbox uses the same shift-cam design as found on the CRF450R to ensure positive changes, and is equipped with an aluminium assist slipper clutch. Throttle By Wire (TBW) system, which brings with it 3 riding modes to adjust engine character and output to suit riding conditions. Riders will also enjoy Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC)

CHASSIS/SUSPENSION
The Africa Twin’s semi-double cradle steel frame provides the perfect balance of high-speed stability and genuine off-road ability by combining sheer strength with flexibility. The engine is mounted on 6 engine hangers, which keeps vibration to a minimum, avoiding the need for steering dampers. The lithium-ion battery contributes to a 2.3kg overall weight saving, while several detail changes further improve the machine’s off-road ability and durability.

The fully adjustable 45mm Showa inverted forks, fully-adjustable rear shock, dual radial-mount Nissin four-piston brake calipers and 310mm ‘wave’ style floating discs are unchanged for 2019. The 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheels are constructed from stainless steel, and block tyres are also approved for fitment.

OTHER FEATURES
The Africa Twin is styled with minimum bodywork in a tough, lightweight form that offers both wind protection for the rider and a slim, agile feel. Dual LED headlights maintain the original’s presence, while the negative LCD meter closely follows the layout of the Dakar race machine. Seat height adjusts 20mm from the standard 870mm down to 850mm, and an 18.8-litre fuel tank provides great touring range.

The 2019 CRF1000L Africa Twin will be available in Australia in Matte Ballistic Black Metallic and Grand Prix Red
